Environmental Rights

At the National Initiative for Empowered Children and Adolescents in Honduras (INNAEH), we understand that the rights of girls, boys, and adolescents are directly connected to the well-being of our planet. Climate change, pollution, the climate crisis, loss of biodiversity in our ecosystems, the lack of public policies in favor of environmental rights, and the lack of support for environmentalists defending these rights represent some of the greatest threats to the future of new generations.

Human rights and the right to a healthy environment are inseparable, especially when we consider the direct impact that environmental degradation has on the lives, health, and opportunities of children and adolescents.

Why is it important?

Climate change and its effects, such as global warming, pollution, and ecosystem destruction, affect everyone, but it is girls, boys, and adolescents who face the most severe consequences. Natural disasters, water scarcity, food insecurity, and loss of biodiversity are some of the challenges that hinder the fulfillment of fundamental rights for children and adolescents. We seek to empower children and adolescents to become informed and capable of making a significant impact in addressing this global crisis.

Environmental Rights and Children:

Environmental Rights are an extension of Human Rights recognized by the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This relationship is reflected in key issues such as:

Right to Health

Air, water, and land pollution affects the physical and mental health of children and adolescents. A polluted environment increases the risk of respiratory and digestive diseases, jeopardizing their mental health.

Right to Education

Environmental crises, such as droughts or floods, affect the availability and quality of education, displacing entire communities and closing schools.

Right to Food and Water

: Food insecurity and water scarcity are direct effects of climate change that limit access to a dignified life.

Right to Participation

Children and adolescents have the right to be heard in decisions that affect their environment. Their participation in environmental protection is essential for positive change.

From INNAEH, we want to actively work to promote the environmental rights of children and adolescents in Honduras.
